Job description:

Head Orientation Counselors organize, plan, and execute Carnegie Mellon’s week-long orientation program for approximately 100 new students enrolled for the Fall of 2016. New Student Orientation is an integral component of the Carnegie Mellon experience which assists new students in a successful transition from high school to CMUQ. We operate a unique orientation program model, whereby students (or Head Orientation Counselors) act as the primary organizers for orientation, rather than the more traditional staff-run model. This model provides these four students valuable real-world work experience running a large scale program. To enhance the learning potential, CMU professional staff provides consistent supervision and advising throughout the summer.

Head Orientation Counselor (HOC) Position Descriptions:

HOC for Logistics:
The primary role of the HOC for Logistics is to coordinate logistical issues such as catering and transportation as well as create and manage the orientation budget. This includes seeking out multiple vendor options for all meals throughout the week, arranging transportation for all activities, reserving rooms for use during orientation, making sure all technical equipment is available and setup for the orientation week, tracking all expenditures throughout the summer and orientation week, and making sure the HOC team does not exceed the orientation budget.


HOC for Marketing:
The primary role of the HOC for Marketing is to design online and print marketing materials. This includes creating a logo and the branding theme for Orientation 2015, designing and printing all mailed materials for new students with information regarding their orientation week, and designing and printing all giveaways (shirts, bags, schedules, etc.) given to students and the orientation team during the orientation week. In addition, this student is responsible for updating all the online information regarding Orientation on the CMUQ website and the Class of 2019 Facebook page.

HOC for Orientation Counselor and Leader Training (OC/OL):
The primary role of the HOC for OC/OL Training is the recruitment, selection, and training of the Orientation Counselor/Orientation Leader staff, consisting of approximately 30 undergraduate students. This student oversees the entire application and interview process for OC's and OL's, plans a one-day training session in the spring semester and a 2-day training session in August before orientation, and is responsible for supervising all OC's and OL's during the orientation week.

HOC for Scheduling:
The primary role of the HOC for Scheduling is to create the week-long orientation schedule. This includes communicating with all involved staff and faculty, scheduling meal times, academic sessions, student life info sessions and any other additional sessions. This student is responsible for making sure the schedule flows well throughout the orientation week and making sure each session aligns with the overall goals of the program.

The Scheduling HOC will also be the point person for the online application for scheduling ('Guidebook'); however each student will be contributing to the web application content.

Payment

Each Head Orientation Counselor works approximately 700 hours over the course of the summer. The HOC’s start work March 24, 2016 and finish employment on August 18, 2016.
