Job description:

Head Orientation Counselor (HOC) Position Descriptions:

HOC for Logistics:

The primary role of the HOC for Logistics is to coordinate logistical issues such as catering and transportation as well as create and manage the orientation budget. This includes seeking out multiple vendor options for all meals throughout the week, arranging transportation for all activities, making sure all technical equipment is available and setup for the orientation week, tracking all expenditures throughout the summer and orientation week, and making sure the HOC team does not exceed the orientation budget. The HOC for Logistics is also responsible for the recruitment, selection, training and supervision of the Orientation Leaders to prepare for all logistical aspects of Orientation week (sessions, meals, activities, etc.). Additionally, this student will coordinate with the HOC for Scheduling to reserve all rooms and spaces required for Orientation week.

HOC for Marketing:

The primary role of the HOC for Marketing is to design online and print marketing materials. This includes creating a logo and the branding theme for Orientation 2019, designing and printing all mailed materials for new students with information regarding their Orientation week, designing and printing all giveaways (shirts, bags, etc.) given to students and the Orientation team, and purchasing all decorations for the building for Orientation week . This student is responsible for updating all the online information regarding Orientation on the CMUQ website, and the Orientation the Class of 2023 social media pages. Additionally, this student will recruit, select, train, and supervise the Orientation Media Coordinators throughout training and Orientation week as they assist with the creation of the Lipdub video, Convocation slide show, photos throughout the week, etc. Proficiency in video and picture editing is preferred.

HOC for Orientation Counselor (OC) Training:

The primary role of the HOC for OC Training is the recruitment, selection, and training of the Orientation Counselor staff, consisting of approximately 30 undergraduate students. This student coordinates a comprehensive application and interview process for all Orientation positions, plans a one-day retreat session in the spring semester and a 4-5 day training session in August before Orientation, and is responsible for supervising all OC's during the Orientation week. This student will also plan all leadership and team building activities for Orientation week and effectively communicate them to the Orientation team.

HOC for Scheduling:

The primary role of the HOC for Scheduling is to create the week-long orientation schedule. This includes scheduling all academic, student life and informational sessions; coordinating with the HOC for Logistics to reserve rooms and spaces for use during Orientation week; and communicating with all involved staff and faculty. This student is responsible for making sure the schedule flows well throughout the Orientation week and making sure each session aligns with the overall goals of the program.

The Scheduling HOC will also be the point person for the online application for scheduling Orientation week ('Guidebook'); however each student will be contributing to the web application content.

Head Orientation Counselors organize, plan, and execute Carnegie Mellon’s week-long orientation program for approximately 100 new students enrolled for the Fall of 2019. New Student Orientation is an integral component of the Carnegie Mellon experience which assists new students in a successful transition from high school to CMUQ. We operate a unique orientation program model, whereby students (Head Orientation Counselors) act as the primary organizers for orientation, rather than the more traditional staff-run model. This model provides these four students valuable real-world work experience running a large scale program. To enhance the learning potential, CMU professional staff provides consistent supervision and advising throughout the summer.
